I believe all artists should give themselves “mini projects” or devote a specific amount of time to creating just for the purpose of creating. Often artists, get so caught up in selling, they lose passion for their craft. These projects not only help artists to stay creative, but they can also lead to new ideas all while preventing burnout.
I sometimes get so caught up in the other aspects of The Scouted Studio that I forget to take time just to paint. This year, I committed to paint a little bit each week just for myself. It has led to new series ideas, decreased anxiety and an excitement to go to work! Taking time away from working has actually made me more creative and productive.
I challenge you to pick a time to just play around in your studio. Head to your local art supply store or browse around online. Pick up a few new tools or try a different surface to paint on.
After 5 months of experimenting a little each week, I put together a short list of my new favorite tools for the studio.
I have loved adding another dimension to my paintings with these watercolor pencils. They can be used as colored pencils but they also mix with water to create a watercolor effect. I love using them in both ways to create texture and pops of color as shown in my recent wildflower series.

3. WOOD PANELS
I love the feel of painting on these sanded panels. My recent series all were on these panels and I don't think I am ever going back!
4. GOUACHE
Gouache paints like an opaque watercolor. I love laying down a wash with my new watercolor pencils and then adding deep colors with gouache.
I have tested out a lot of surfaces, but right now I really love this paper. It is super smooth and great to draw on with micron pencils! All of my house renderings are on this paper.
